A preliminary study suggests that a drug commonly used to treat sleep problems improves quality of life in people with brain cancer. The study involved 30 people who had developed attention, memory, and fatigue problems after being treated for brain cancer. On average, patients' memories and ability to pay attention improved by more than 20 percent, mood improved by 35 percent, and fatigue levels dropped by nearly 50 percent. In addition, the side effects of modafinil were mostly mild or moderate, such as headaches, which were easily managed by adjusting the dose and timing of modafinil treatment. While the findings are promising, the researchers note that more study is needed to determine modafinil's long-term effects before it is widely used by people with brain cancer.
